Buying transformer oil: what IEC 60296:2020 actually tells you

The relevant standard for transformer oil is IEC 60296, “Fluids for electrotechnical applications — Mineral insulating oils for electrical equipment.” The older version most specifications still quote is the 2012 edition. The current one is IEC 60296:2020, the fifth edition, and the differences are worth knowing before a purchase order goes out.
The 2020 edition widened the scope and — more usefully for a buyer — introduced a performance-based classification. Type A denotes oil that performs above the general requirement. Type B denotes oil that meets it. That single distinction tells you more about what you are buying than a page of unreferenced claims.
The edition also brought in more demanding test methods, including a stray gassing test that measures how the oil behaves thermally in service rather than only when new. Stray gassing matters because it can otherwise be mistaken for a developing fault during dissolved gas analysis.
So when buying transformer oil, ask for two things: the IEC 60296:2020 specification the oil is supplied against, and the test report that demonstrates it. A supplier who can produce both is describing a product. A supplier who cannot is describing an intention.
Oil meeting the current edition resists oxidation and acid formation, holds a higher dielectric strength, carries less moisture, and performs consistently over a long service life — which is the same thing as saying it extends the life of the transformer it sits inside.
