A vacuum on-load tap changer makes and breaks the tap current inside sealed vacuum interrupters rather than in oil. Because no arc reaches the oil, the oil stays clean, contact wear drops sharply and the maintenance interval extends well beyond a conventional oil-switching design — the argument for it is whole-life cost rather than first cost.
