A voltage transformer — also called a potential transformer — reduces system voltage to a standard secondary, typically 110 V, so that meters, relays and synchronising equipment can measure it safely. Indoor cast-resin units are built into MV switchgear panels alongside the current transformers that complete the measurement set.
