A composite bushing replaces the porcelain housing with a silicone rubber shed system over a fibreglass tube. It holds its hydrophobicity in salt and industrial pollution, weighs considerably less, and does not shatter — which is why it is specified in seismic zones and anywhere a porcelain failure would put people or adjacent plant at risk.
